Paddle Now Newsletter. No 43.

After a surfeit of recent Paddle Now newsletters leading on the theme of deteriorating East-West relations, I had intended to devote this one to environmental matters.  However, while going back over the recent Biden-Putin summit, I took the time to read a full transcript of the speech Biden directed to the American people on his return to Washington. I found its implications so alarming that I couldn’t let them pass unremarked on. Here is an extract after Biden’s claims (unverified except by the US intelligence community) that Russia was malignly interfering with and manipulating US election results:

“Let’s get this straight! How would it be if the United States were viewed by the rest of the world as interfering with the elections directly of other countries, and everybody knew it? What would it be like if we engaged in activities that he is engaged in? It diminishes the standing of a country that is desperately trying to make sure it maintains its standing as a major world power. And so it’s not just what I do; it’s what the actions that other countries take – in this case, Russia – that are contrary to international norms. It’s the price they pay. They are not – they are not able to dictate what happens in the world. There are other nations of significant consequence – i.e. the United States of America being one of them.”

What was Biden, or his teleprompters thinking of? Even The US media (though by no means all of it) questioned such blatant untruths. Honest media Quick aide memoir!  5 minute read. Is Biden truly ignorant of the facts, or the boldest of liars? Is he consciously working to Goebbels’s principle that if you shout something often enough and loud enough it becomes true?  It would indeed be frightening if the decision-making apparatus of the US State Department and its Intelligence agencies had become so divorced from reality that they have started to follow the majority of the American public in coming to believe their own propaganda agencies.

As the article points out, such blatant untruths do the USA no favours. Thought the vast mass of ignorant Americans might believe it and feel good about it, as they build their hate for the evil that dares meddle in the purity of their electoral process, there cannot be a country apart from the USA whose intelligence agencies and foreign service are not fully aware of America’s much vaunted and blatant interference in other nations’ elections. No wonder, US soft-power is fast evaporating.
